Our Century Plant has Completed its Bloom Cycle

Our Century Plant, Agave americana, has just completed its bloom cycle. The plant began sending up a flowering stalk in late September of 2024. As the stalk grew, it formed buds and in early December the plant began to bloom. It is now early February, 2025, and the plant has completed its bloom cycle.

For Century Plants, the beginning of the bloom cycle represents the final days of its long life. Most Century Plants live between 25-40 years. While we are sad to say goodbye to this Century Plant, we are left with an abundance of its pups which are genetic clones of the mother plant and are clustered at its base. Once the mother plant has been cut back, we will repot the pups saving some for the greenhouse and distributing the remainder to others around campus.
