Aeschynanthus radicans – Lipstick PlantĀ

Common Name: Lipstick Plant

Latin Name: Aeschynanthus radicans

Family Name: Gesneriaceae

Geographical Range: Native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, including regions of Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. It has become popular as a houseplant and is cultivated worldwide.

Fun Fact: The Lipstick Plant gets its name because of its unique flower buds, which resemble tubes of lipstick as they emerge from dark-colored calyxes which are the sepals of a flower, typically forming a whorl that encloses the petals and forms a protective layer around a flower in bud.

Uses by people: Primarily grown as an ornamental houseplant due to its striking, vivid red flowers and attractive, trailing growth habit.

Uses by animals: In its natural habitat, the flowers attract pollinators such as bees, sunbirds, and especially hummingbirds which are drawn to its bright color and sweet nectar.

Roles in their ecosystem: As an epiphyte in tropical forests, the Lipstick Plant grows on other plants or trees without harming them, contributing to vertical diversity within the forest canopy. It provides nectar for pollinators, which supports local pollination networks. Additionally, its presence adds to the structural complexity of the rainforest, supporting various small animals and insects.
