Wild Cousins:
Though this orchid is a developed hybrid, the genus Oncidium contains approximately 370 wild-type species. The genus has undergone significant change since 2009, as molecular DNA analysis has helped clarify plant genetic relationships with each other. This taxonomic housekeeping is still well underway. One plant still within Oncidium is of this hybrid’s parent species – Oncidium sotoanum R.Jiménez & Hágsater. 3
Conservation Status: Unassessed 4
Conservation Concern:
Due to little research on this species in its native habitat, the conservation status and concerns of this species are not well described. However, given the plant’s distribution in tropical areas, it is likely the species is threatened, like many other tropical species, by habitat degradation due to land use conversion to development and agriculture. 4
Geographical Range:
This species is native to Central America.4
Ecoregion: Central America bioregion
Ecological Interactions:
Like many other orchid species, this plant likely provides food for insects and birds via its nectar and fruits.
Ethnobotanical Use: The genus Oncidium is a significant part of the ornamental orchid trade, highly sought out by breeders, collectors, and hobbyists. Oncidium sotoanum is prized for its scent, described as similar to vanilla, another orchid. 5
