Alocasia sanderiana – Kris plant

Common Name: Kris plant

Latin Name: Alocasia sanderiana

Family Name: Araceae (Arum)

Geographical Range: Native to the tropical rainforests of the Philippines. It is now widely grown as an ornamental plant, and also cultivated as a houseplant in many parts of the world.

Fun Fact: It is sometimes referred to as the “Elephant Ear Plant” due to the large, ear-shaped leaves. The Kris Plant stands out because of its distinctive, deeply lobed leaf edges and the dramatic, almost metallic look of its dark green leaves

Uses by people: The primary use of the Kris Plant is ornamental. Its striking foliage makes it popular as a houseplant and a decorative addition to tropical gardens.

Uses by animals: The calcium oxalate crystals in the leaves can cause irritation in the mouths and digestive systems of herbivores or pets, so most animals do not feed on it.

Roles in their ecosystem: In its native tropical rainforest habitat, the Kris Plant contributes to the understorey environment by providing cover and microhabitats for small organisms and insects.
